Sample Lesson Plan
Week 9 Monday: Book Banning
Learning Outcomes:
Students will...
Identify a correlation between book banning and diverse books
Discuss the consequences of banning diverse books
Warm Up (5 mins)
Individually, students get out a piece of paper and write down:
ONE question they have about book banning
TWO things that surprised them in the readings/viewings for today
THREE things from today’s reading that they felt connected to our course content
Small Group Exploration Activity (25 mins)
In small groups of 4-5 people, students are directed to the “Top 10 Most Challenged Books Lists” (2001 - Present) by the American Library Association. Each group is assigned to look at a list from one of the last five years. With their assigned list, groups will do/discuss:
Looking at your list, what trends do you immediately notice?
Research each book and author. How many of these titles prominently feature diverse characters or are written by diverse authors? What percentage of the list would be considered diverse books?
Choose one book from the list. Research it. What objections can you find for its content? What support do you find?
Share Out (20 mins)
Beginning with the earliest year, each small group shares their findings with the class.
Large Group Discussion (25 mins)
What trends do you notice across all five years of banned books?
What is the correlation between diverse titles and book banning? Why do you think this correlation exists?
Return to your warm-up write. What information from today’s readings did you find to be surprising or relevant to our work?
What questions do you have about book banning?
